Other materials include: his diaries, 1905 and 1908; notebooks and lists of Custom house employees, 1890-1892 at the Port of Chicago; photographs and a printer's plate of his image; a notebook of his mother's estate, 1867-1898; and real estate papers related to his property in Colorado and Illinois, 1867-1910.

Clark (1837- ) who lived in White Pigeon, St. Joseph County (Mich.) was the son of Mary E. (d. 1867?) and Robert Clark, Jr. (d. 1837). His father was a Deputy U.S. land surveyor. John grew up in Michigan and moved with his mother and brother to a dairy farm on Clark St., Cook County (Ill.), outside of Chicago in 1849. The dairy farm made them quite wealthy. Robert Clark, Jr. was a Lt. and Quartermaster of the 11th Regiment, Michigan Militia. As a Deputy U.S. Land Surveyor, he surveyed in the Grand Rapids and St. Joseph County (Mich.) areas. In 1828-1829 he bought land in and moved to the White Pigeon Village (Mich.) area, which he had helped survey.
